CSP vs ESD vs Open Value — Which Microsoft Licensing is Right?

A plain-English guide to choosing between Microsoft's three licensing channels for Indian businesses.

Microsoft software in India can be bought through three main channels — ESD (Electronic Software Delivery, one-time perpetual buy), Open Value (volume licensing for 5+ seats, 3-year term with Software Assurance) and CSP (Cloud Solution Provider, monthly / annual subscription billed by us in INR). This guide explains the differences and helps you pick the right one for your business.

When to choose ESD

Choose ESD when you need 1 – 4 seats, have no plans to upgrade software regularly, and want the lowest sticker price. Common ESD buys: single-user Office LTSC, one Windows 11 Pro upgrade, one Visio Professional. Cost-effective for individual designers, engineers or founders who own their tools for years.

When to choose Open Value

Choose Open Value when you have 5+ seats, want to standardise across the team, and want free version upgrades bundled (Software Assurance). Open Value spreads payment over 3 years, so cash flow is easier than a big ESD lump sum. Best for growing SMBs, small architecture / design studios, family offices.

When to choose CSP

Choose CSP when you want monthly / annual billing (no big up-front payment), the ability to add / drop seats every 30 days (monthly plan) or year, and always-current software. CSP is the only way to buy Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, Teams Phone and Azure. Best for startups, seasonal businesses, and any company where headcount changes often.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest Microsoft licensing channel?
ESD (Electronic Software Delivery) has the lowest per-license sticker price — typically 30 % off list. But CSP monthly can be cheaper in cash-flow terms (small monthly fee vs one large one-time buy), especially if you might not need the license for 5+ years.
Can I mix Open Value and CSP in the same organisation?
Yes — most Indian SMBs use Open Value for foundational software (Windows Server, SQL Server, Office LTSC) and CSP for user-facing subscriptions (Microsoft 365, Teams Phone, Power BI). They coexist under the same Microsoft tenant.
Which channel is best for Indian startups?
For startups under 25 seats with variable headcount, CSP monthly is best — pay only for who's active, cancel anytime. Once you stabilise at 15+ seats and know your product/tech stack, switch to Open Value for lower cost + Software Assurance.
Can I convert from Open Value to CSP later?
Yes — many customers do this at Open Value renewal (end of year 3). We'll help you re-price on CSP terms so the switch is cost-neutral or better. The Microsoft tenant stays the same; only the billing channel changes.
